UNBOUND

A queer kink opera by Nathan Hall, libretto by Alan Olejniczak.

Produced by Luster Productions

My task was to create commemorative artwork for this unique experience to be included as a supporter perk and merchandise for audiences.  My first career aspiration was to become an opera singer at age five, so the opportunity to be involved in an opera production (even in such a small role) was in some ways a dream come true. I was inspired by the work of Ichiro Tsuruta and Maz Hussain as I illustrated this shibari scene.

Unbound’s full-length production video is available for online download and viewing. Shot by John Roberts of Dustmite Films on site at Studio Friction in advance of the show’s debut in Denver in 2021. It is edited and mixed by the composer, with additional mixing by Jonathan Galle and color correction by John Roberts.

Unbound is a kink opera about searching for a sexual fantasy--the one you think you want, and the one that may change you. Set in a darkened gay fetish club, our main character meets men along the way who offer him scenarios of desire, but no emotional connection. Then a stranger offers something new and different- a bondage experience. Over the evening they build a relationship that builds to a sensual climax. The opera ultimately is about loving oneself, trusting someone else, and exploring feelings that are all too often relegated to the shadows. Unbound is a 60-minute chamber opera in one act, with no live instruments besides voices and an “orchestra” of electronic sounds.
